MAKING A CRYPTEX YOURSELF

Sometimes you'll find them in escape rooms and in the movie: 'The Da Vinci Code' this object plays a important role: the cryptex. A very cool item to play with letters and words. You can also make a simple version of a cryptex yourself. This can be very useful (and fun) if you make a DIY escape room or escapegame. We promise you: it's super easy!

Psst! We also made instructions ons how to make a decipher wheel youself.

MAKING A CRYPTEX (SIMPLE)

  1. Determine which words you want to make and make sure these letters are in the right column.
  2. If you use a toilet roll, your paper strips must be 5,5 inch / 14 cm long to fit perfectly.
  3. Wrap the strip around the toilet roll and tape the ends together with a little piece of Scotch tape.
  4. Place on both sides of the toilet roll a little mark at the same height. Do the same on the back of the roll. Here you will see the code.

READ THE CODE

If you know what the correct answers are, you can flip the toilet roll and see the code on the back. The little marks help with reading the correct code.

TIP: while making the cryptex, you can play with the placing of the letters in the strip.
